It'd be a pain in the arse to do that or those quests or spend all the money to get these new skills.

When you change profession, you get a couple basic skills for that profession. You need to buy any additional skills regardless of whether they're unlocked, UNLESS that same character previously had those skills. A single character has to earn or buy all of his/her skills and after doing so never loses them. Hope this clarifies things.

Well, I have reconfigured my skill bar, with the following...(left to right)
Life Bond, Watchful Spirit, Blessed Signet, Orison of Healing, Mend Ailment, Aegis, Balthazar's Spirit, Resurrect
I do trade out Watchful Spirit and put in "Watch yourself!" or some other general function protection, sometimes. (Though, I have to put points into Tactics.) I've also got Peace and Harmony which I can replace something I don't feel is necessary, depending. Mend Ailment is switchable with whatever is needed at a particular situation. I like Watchful Spirit as a buffer enchantment, so that even if it's stripped, it manages to heal. This can be useful as a quick boost heal one people, but it's rather expensive. Essence Bond is nice too, but only if I'm really going for a Bonding/Healing rather than Bonding/Protection type of build.
I haven't gotten Life Barrier yet (nor become Secondary Mesmer), but I haven't really found if that's such a big deal though. Maybe in higher level areas, where tanks will take more damage. It does get kinda boring just sitting back and doing periodic heals with Orison while Watchful Spirit does a lot of work for you.
Also, I find Resurrect best rez skill, at the moment. I either use that or Restore Life. Rebirth risks shutting down your maintained enchantments, which is self-defeating.

I do have Factions, but I've hardly had time to get into it with all that I am doing in Prophecies, lol. I know using Warrior right now isn't best for Bonding, in general, but it works alright for the moment, but even better with a little Bonding and Protection or Bonding and Healing, just for the energy tapping available in the right situations.
I like to just put Balth's Spirit on me, then I may bond a few people, with one pip still on Energy bar. Nearing a fight or shortly before leaving anywhere, I will kick on Blessed Signet and bond some more. Secondary enchantments depend on just how thick the fighting is going to get or is getting. Aegis saves me a few seconds (it lasts 30 seconds, lots of time for other stuff to recharge). Vigorous Spirit has been a good idea too. Just throw that on a warrior or two, let them take care of some of their own minor healing for a bit. It also heals when you cast it, so it's a cheapy plus self-perpetuating with tanks and such.
I remember one time going through the first four training PvP arenas, just myself and a fellow guildmate. The rest were henchies. I was getting PUMMELLED in a corner, energy flying all around, hitting Aegis after Aegis as soon as it recharged, "Watch yourself!" after the next as soon as adrenaline kicked in. I'd heal and heal and breeze and breeze. Pretty intense. Eventually, my guilde buddy wittled the others down enough to come get me...I was cornered and being mobbed by at least three or four or five people. Whew.
Anyway, it's done its job when it's had to. You make do, you know?
